I am very fortunate that when I applied for a tourist visa to Japan in 2023, I did not choose the convenient option of submitting the V44 application, but instead prepared various materials and applied for the V72.
A few days after I submitted my application, Chongqing City implemented a new policy, under which only tax certificates can be submitted for V70 and V72 applications (V72 can still use the record of two trips to Japan within three years to exempt the asset certificate requirement).
Fortunately, just a few days before the new policy was implemented, I successfully submitted my V72 visa application with the help of a deposit certificate. Therefore, I can freely travel to Japan within three years. This allows me to travel to Osaka for a vacation in early 2024 when I am feeling extremely down, without my family knowing.
In recent years, Chinese tourists applying for tourist visas to Japan mainly have the following types:
Individual single-entry tourist visa (V) AS A TEMPORARY VISITOR (INDIVIDUAL) V43 ———— This type does not require a tour guide or guide from a travel agency in both Japan and China, and tourists can travel independently. The validity period is generally "3 months", and the length of stay is either "15 days" or "30 days". The application requirements are relatively high. In addition to submitting basic information (passport original, visa application form, recent ID photo, copy of ID card, copy of household registration book, and proof of employment/school/retirement), at least one of the following asset certificates must be submitted: holding a credit card with a gold card or higher, salary flow with an annual income of over 100,000 yuan, 100,000 yuan RMB deposit certificate (to be frozen until after returning from Japan), and property certificate.
(V) AS A TEMPORARY VISITOR (TOKUDAI) V44 ———— This type is similar to V43, but it is applicable to students studying in the 1243 designated universities. In addition to basic information, only a proof of enrollment or an enrollment report from the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC) is required, and no asset certificate is required.
Multiple-entry tourist visa for travel to Okinawa or the six northeastern prefectures (V) AS A TEMPORARY VISITOR (OKINAWA) (M) V66 / V67 / V68 / V69 / V73 / V74 ———— This type of visa can be used multiple times within a validity period of 3 years, with a length of stay of "30 days". For the first visit to Japan, at least one day must be spent in Okinawa or the six northeastern prefectures. From the second visit onwards, it can also be used for short-term visits other than sightseeing. To apply for this visa, in addition to submitting basic information including a record of one trip to Japan within three years (not applicable to V44), only a salary slip with an annual income of 100,000 yuan RMB needs to be provided.
Multiple-entry tourist visa for individuals with sufficient financial capacity (V) AS A TEMPORARY VISITOR V72 ———— This type of visa can also be used multiple times within a validity period of 3 years, with a length of stay of "30 days", and a visit to Japan must be made within three months after applying for the visa. The application requirements for this visa are relatively high, and it requires a salary slip with an annual income of over 200,000 yuan, a tax certificate with a tax payment of 18,000 yuan RMB per year, or a deposit certificate of 500,000 yuan RMB. However, for tourists who frequently travel to Japan, they can submit a record of two trips to Japan within three years to exempt the asset certificate requirement (not applicable to V44). From the second visit onwards, it can also be used for short-term visits other than sightseeing. The recipients are individuals with sufficient financial capacity and their family members, with one member of the family serving as the main applicant and the other members as the accompanying applicants.
Multiple-entry visa for individuals with high income (V) AS A TEMPORARY VISITOR (SPECIAL) V70 ———— This visa can be used multiple times within a validity period of 5 years, with a length of stay of "90 days". From the first visit to Japan, it can also be used for short-term visits other than sightseeing. The applicant can personally decide and change the booking of air tickets, boat tickets, accommodation facilities, and the entire travel itinerary. The application requirements for this visa are the highest. In addition to basic information, a deposit certificate of 1.5 million yuan RMB or a tax certificate with a tax payment of 80,000 yuan RMB per year must be provided. The recipients are individuals with "relatively high income" and their family members, with one member of the family serving as the main applicant and the other members as the accompanying applicants.
